One of my favourite days out is a boat trip from Dalyan.

There are several boats licenced to go out to sea and I would recommend Captain Mesut Ertekin’s boat – Dalyan Mesut’s Boat – for fantastic hospitality and amazing food – Turkish mezes and salad prepared on board by his Mum with meat and fish barbecued expertly by Mesut!

As the boat begins to meander down the river towards the sea you can take coffee or tea or go upfront, lie back and begin to soak up the sun. Take the opportunity to watch the ever changing scenery, marvel at the rock tombs and hopefully spot some kingfishers. You can also glimpse the ruins of Caunos and the small village of Candir on the other side of the river.

Then once you’ve sailed down river and past the sandbank at Iztuzu beach there are hundreds of little coves and bays to explore around the area. Bacardi Bay, Devils Bay, Asi Bay, Ekincik to name a few.

The usual route is out past Hole Island and then on to one of the many beaches and caves. As the boats stops you will be able to jump into the deep blue sea, snorkel and look for fish.

As you travel back towards Dalyan later afternoon – the boat will often stop at Candir Lake where there are hot thermal springs under the lake, meaning that the deeper you go the hotter the water, so a swim is very much recommended.
